About Davies

Built on Hard Work. Run With Integrity.

Meet Colin Davies

My name is Colin Davies. I'm the owner of Davies Hauling & Cleanup, and I live in Cheney with my wife, Melanie, our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. Long before starting this company, I grew up around construction. I worked alongside my dad building high-end custom homes throughout King and Snohomish Counties in Western Washington. I did a little bit of everything: concrete, framing, siding, finish work, and whatever else needed to get done. Some of the subcontractors my dad worked with were people I knew when I was eight years old and were still around when I was working in construction in my twenties. I didn't think much about it at the time, but looking back, that taught me something important about business. Good relationships last.

In 1998, at 25 years old, I left construction and became a police officer. I spent the next 23 years with a municipal law enforcement agency in Washington, working as a patrol officer, trainer, and assistant supervisor. Police work taught me a lot about people. It taught me how to communicate, how to stay calm when things aren't going according to plan, and how important it is to show up when someone needs you. I spent a lot of years helping people through some of the most stressful minutes and days of their lives.

When I retired from law enforcement in 2021, Melanie and I moved to Montana. Her job as a land development project manager for a commercial construction company allowed her to work remotely, so we had the opportunity to go somewhere we'd always wanted to live. We spent our time hunting, fishing, and enjoying Montana. We thought we'd be there for years… then our grandson was born.

Our kids were living in Everett, and we were several states away in southwest Montana. It didn't take many trips back and forth for me to realize how much Melanie missed her daughter and how important being close to our grandson was going to be to both of us. I suggested we all move to the Spokane area, and in 2025, that's exactly what we did.

Getting Back to Work

After retiring from law enforcement, I had time to decompress and figure out what I wanted the next chapter of my life to look like. I earned my commercial driver's license in 2021, but hadn't really put it to use. I realized I missed parts of my construction days. I missed working outside with a team and I missed working with equipment and tools. I also missed being able to look back at the end of the day and physically see what I'd accomplished.

In June 2026, Melanie and I decided to use our collective experiences and start Davies Hauling and Cleanup. We're building this company around something pretty simple:

Be professional. Be reliable. Be responsive. Do what you say you're going to do.

We answer our phones and return calls. We work with integrity and respect people's property. If we're working alongside contractors or other trades, we're going to treat them with the same respect. We're here to help with the cleanup jobs property owners and professionals either can't do or simply don't have the time and equipment to handle themselves. Our services include debris cleanup, junk removal, property cleanouts, demolition, construction cleanup, and defensible space fire prevention..

Building Relationships That Last

One of the biggest things I took away from watching my dad run construction projects was the value of having good people you could call again and again. That's what I want to build here. If you're a property manager, real estate agent, builder, insurance agent, restoration company, contractor, or investor, I don't want Davies Hauling and Cleanup to be a company you hire once and forget about. I want us to earn your trust. I want to be the number you already have in your phone when a tenant leaves a property full of junk, a project needs debris hauled away, a house needs to be cleaned out before a flip, or a property needs defensible space fire prevention work. The goal isn't one job. It's becoming someone you know you can call.

An Unexpected Introduction to Defensible Space Fire Prevention

Within 48 hours of closing on our home near Cheney, our insurance company came out and inspected the property. A couple of days later, the company we'd been insured with for more than 25 years canceled our homeowners insurance. I couldn't believe it.

We started calling insurance companies locally and nationally and kept hearing essentially the same thing: our property was considered a high wildfire risk. We were given a list of deficiencies and approximately 30 days to address them and appeal the decision. So I went to work.

We hired a landscaping company to address mature landscaping immediately surrounding the house. I rented a skid steer with a mulching head and spent three days clearing brush and small trees to create approximately 100 feet of defensible space around our home. I spent several more days limbing trees and bushes according to the requirements we'd been given. It was unexpected, urgent, and expensive. It took a lot of work because the previous owners hadn't kept up on this type of maintenance. There was plenty of stress involved because even with all the work we didn't know whether we'd be able to get our homeowners insurance coverage back, but we got it done.

We documented the work, submitted everything back to the insurance company, and our coverage was reinstated. More importantly, I looked at our property differently afterward. I understood why the work mattered. I feel considerably better about how our home is prepared for wildfire and I know what type of defensible space fire prevention/maintenance work is important to insurance companies. This experience is ultimately part of the reason we started Davies Hauling & Cleanup.

Why This Work Matters to Us

In August 2026, wildfires devastated communities throughout the Spokane area, destroying hundreds of structures and displacing families from their homes and businesses. Our family was affected too. Fire burned through property belonging to members of Melanie's family, causing extensive damage and the loss of tens of thousands of dollars in personal belongings. Thankfully, their home and shop survived.

We drove through some of the areas affected by the fires afterward. It's difficult to understand the extent of that kind of devastation until you see it in person. It looked like a war zone. Seeing what happened to families in our own community reinforced why property cleanup, defensible space fire prevention, and rebuilding work matter.

Davies Hauling & Cleanup is a new company, but we're here for the long haul. We want to become a valuable resource for Spokane, Cheney and the surrounding communities and do our part to help property owners, businesses, and professionals take care of difficult jobs when they need another set of hands.

There's nothing complicated about how we want to do business. Answer the phone. Show up. Work hard. Treat people right. Good relationships last.
